[ Rajon Music Group / Tangata Records / CD ]
Release Date: Tuesday, 29 January, 2008
Moana and the Moahunters second album RUA, is the follow-up to TAHI, the Gold selling debut. RUA reflects the unique sound of Aotearoa - it fuses dance music but it is the Maori elements that make it different from music from the rest of the world - stories from Aotearoa.
Back once again to stake another land claim upon the charts Moana and her merry band of Moahunters have prepared another album of culturally correct grooves for Tangata Records. Opening with the breathtakingly alive sounds of Richard Nunns playing the Putaatara 'Rua' swiftly moves on to 'Warriors' a song that highlights Moanas continuing links with the Neville Brothers and their sophisticated take on New Orleans' vast musical heritage. The right honourable and very busy Neil Finn is the programming and production guest on 'Kahu' which leads into 'Treaty' where the Moahunters re-aquaint themselves with a bit of the mix up style contrasting rapper Bennet's vocals with a stirring haka. A similar style can be found on 'Titokowaru' and 'Give It Up Now' both of which feature the talents of Dam Native rapper Hypa D. If anything the album gets even better towards the end as the production becomes more cohesive leading to the finale when Moana ropes in the St Joseph Maori Girls College choir for an accapella 'Awe Maria'. Once again the Moahunters have successfully mixed a whole heap of righteous indignation with some sweet sweet music, social struggle never sounded so good. Post Maori Peter
