Alex Lindsay (1919-1974) was born in Invercargill. He began learning the violin at the age of 9 and at 17 won a scholarship to the Royal College of Music in London, where he studied with Albert Sammons. After graduation in 1941 he spent six months leading the orchestra at the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon. He then joined the London Philharmonic Orchestra for two years until called up for military service in the navy.
