Hi -- it's Mel here!

"Mel Moratti is considered something of a legend in New Zealand music circles. He has been a judge at various New Zealand music awards and is a recognised world authority on the light opera duo Gilbert and Sullivan. On top of this, in the last 25 years Mel has also managed several music shops, all of which have at one time or another won awards for being the best record stores in the country. His involvement in the music industry stretches back even further. "I grew up with it. When I left school I started working in music wholesale and marketing, then I went to England and worked for a major record company. I also played flute in various orchestras." On his return to New Zealand in 1977, Mel accepted a position as a shop manager in Auckland and has been in retail ever since."

"Rimsky-Korsakov praised Mily Alexeyevich Balakirev as being an excellent pianist. The two piano concertos of the conservative composer who lived until 1910 are colorful and tuneful works which partake of similar rich orchestrations to the music of Rimsky-Korsakov. No. 2 had...

MARBECKS STAFF PICK: CD OF THE YEAR 2009

"This new recording, taken from a live performance at Denver's Ellie Caulkins Opera House in June, 2008, is brilliant. It is sonically way ahead of the Nonesuch (which was recorded at a very low level), thus making it possible to understand almost every word, and Marin Alsop's tempos are slightly slower than Edo de...

"This disc may be aimed more at the Shostakovich completist, but it's no less wonderful for that. The Girlfriends is a major film score dating from the same time in the 1930s as the scandal surrounding Stalin's denunciation of the opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk District. Scored lightly, for string quartet, piano, trumpet,...
