Missa solemnis in E
Ruth Ziesak, Marianna Pizzolato / Bavarian Radio Symphony / Riccardo Muti

[ EMI Music / CD ]

Release Date: Saturday 1 September 2007

"Muti strikes a blow for Cherubini with a blazing performance of his powerful Missa Solemnis in E given by the choir and orchestra of Bavarian Radio, as well as a quartet of well-blended soloists led from the front like an angelic spear carrier by the soprano Ruth Ziesak." (Timesonline)

"Muti strikes a blow for Cherubini with a blazing performance of his powerful Missa Solemnis in E given by the choir and orchestra of Bavarian Radio, as well as a quartet of well-blended soloists led from the front like an angelic spear carrier by the soprano Ruth Ziesak.

The 1818 work is conceived on a grand scale with a loudly affirmative 15-minute Credo. Introspection is rare, but Ziesak and the alto Marianna Pizzolato duet with sisterly reverence in the Benedictus and the chorus perform a hushed Communio movement, O Salutaris Hostia. With two motets also included, this CD is a reminder of Cherubini's significant influence as a church music composer."

2008 Grammy Award nomination for Best Classical Album

"His (Muti) Missa Solemnis in E is grandly mellifluous, and its honey blanket is emphasised here by the soft-grained recording."
The Times

Riccardo Muti is best known for having been the Music Director of Milan's La Scala opera house from 1986 to 2005 and continues his championing of the Cherubini masses on EMI Classics with this recording of the Missa Solemnis in E with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks. The orchestra and soloists are the cast already familiar through his previous recordings of the Mass in F and the Mass in D minor.
