Brilliant pianist, outstanding conductor and distinguished teacher, Erno Dohnányi, had little time to compose, his total opus numbers no more than 48. Though he is now remembered for one work, the charming Variations on a Nursery Theme, a part of the standard orchestral repertoire, he did compose many fine works for solo piano, full of those long sweeping melodies that characterise his music. He was composing well into the 20th century, his music continuing in the tradition of the great romantic era, often using the folksong of his native Hungary.
