Pelléas et Mélisande is Debussy's only completed opera, a work which occupied him between 1893 -1901. It is regarded as Debussy's finest achievement and it holds a place as one of the most important operas in the history of that genre.
In this opera Debussy combines the symbolism of Maeterlinck's play with music of great colour and restraint. The first performance was given at the Théâtre de l'Opéra-Comique in Paris on 30 April 1902.
This is the first release on CD of this particular recording and is the second that the great Debussy interpreter Ernest Ansemet committed to disc in 1964.
