Nikolai Medtner (1880-1951) was a Russian composer who slowly invaded the recording industry. Especially his piano concertos, mainly no.'s 2 and 3, are receiving attention. But Medtner did write just music just involving the piano. Of his solo works the 38 Fairy Tales along with the 14 sonatas form the core of his output.

By some he is called 'a poor man's Rachmaninov'. But those who agree with this have never listened properly. It is true, however, that some of his compositions have more direct appeal than others. Most of Medtner's piano sonatas, though (extremely) hard to perform, rank among his more outgoing works.

Over the years pianist Hamish Milne has recorded a large number of works by Medtner. Now these recordings have been collected here. The 7 CD's of this set contain the larger part of Medtner's piano solo repertoire. A comprehensive guide through Medtner.
