The works recorded here all have great intimacy. The madrigals, a typically Renaissance vocal genre, were composed before the turn of the 17th century. A set of six of these are remarkable because they were written for a single voice with the other parts being played on the chitarrone.

Salomone (or Salamone) Rossi (ca. 1570-1630?) was a composer of Italian Jewish background in transition from Renaissance to early Baroque. His output is considerable and includes five books of madrigals for 5 voices, four books of instrumental sinfonias, etc., 28 psalms and Jewish songs.

The works recorded here all have great intimacy. The madrigals, a typically Renaissance vocal genre, were composed before the turn of the 17th century. A set of six of these are remarkable because they were written for a single voice with the other parts being played on the chitarrone.

The Canti di Salomone are unusual in so far that their psalm texts are in Hebrew. Rossi published them in 1623 and they are in the Baroque style and (almost) unconnected to traditional Jewish cantorial music. Their polyphony was unprecedented in this context.

The Canti di Salomone are complemented by some later similarly tempered psalms by Purcell and Campra.

With intense performances these Italian ensemble shed some light on this interesting and often innovative composer who deserves a wider audience.
