"Solti's is, in general, a warm and affectionate account of the work, a little slow in the first movement but freshly, engagingly phrased and, elsewhere, most attentive to both text and music. Solti sets an excellent tempo in the second movement, which is often a graveyard for performances of the work. Solti also has good soloists: the very reliable Bernd Weikl and the lovely and accomplished Dame Kiri Te Kanawa."
