60 tracks by various artists displaying the development of soul music in the US charts of 1960.

All of the songs were R&B and/or pop hits and many have become classics of the genre. The artists include legends like Ike & Tina Turner, Ray Charles, the Drifters, Aretha Franklin, the Miracles, Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, James Brown and Bobby Bland. The collection, which includes full details of the original label issues, is the third in an ongoing series following the evolution of soul year by year. The informative booklet notes are authored by respected Echoes/Record Collector journalist Mike Atherton.

1960 found soul pioneers Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, Bobby Bland and James Brown enjoying R&B smashes and also seriously denting the pop charts. This was the year Ben E. King left the Drifters to start his own run of hits, but also provided the lead vocals on the group's classics like "Save The Last Dance For Me" while they decided on a replacement frontman. Other newcomers to the listings that became stars of the genre include Aretha Franklin, Ike & Tina Turner, Mary Wells, Ted Taylor, Irma Thomas and Maxine Brown. Indeed the embarrassment of riches in the charts of 1960 is such that we have taken the necessary step of increasing Soul Breakout from a 1CD, 30-track format to a generous 60-track, 2CD selection. This allows full justice to the soul hits of 1960 and the golden years that lie ahead.
