The daughter of a preacher, Pearl Bailey achieved success over several different levels of the entertainment industry, including recording, Broadway, films and television. Her first major record success came with Takes Two To Tango, a track that enabled her to appeal to the pop and jazz markets simultaneously. Her fame reached its peak at the end of the 1950s with her appearance in the film Porgy And Bess alongside Sidney Poitier.
