There are numerous opera which give the chance to the producer for spectacular scenery but some actually demand it - one of these, without doubt, is AIDA.

In November 1869 both the Suez Canal and Cairo's new Opera House opened and the success there of Verdi's Rigoletto prompted Ismail Pasha, Khedive of Egypt, to commission another opera. Verdi was 56 and had great experience in selecting suitable subjects, with none readily available he twice refused, but in the following May he was sent a synopsis that sparked his interest and which would give him one of his greatest triumphs. Set against the conflict between Egypt and Ethiopia Aida, the daughter of the Ethiopian King but now a slave of the Egyptian King's daughter, is torn between her loyalty to her country and the reciprocated love for the Chief of the Egyptian Army. There can be no doubt that Herbert von Karajan loved this opera and his cast of world-renowned singers together with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (who play for the Vienna Opera) and the Opera Chorus respond to his thrilling direction.
