The Auckland Choral Society, founded in 1855, is the longest surviving arts organisation in Australasia. We have 150 performing members, under Musical Director Peter Watts, who sing a wide repertoire of choral favourites, great masterworks and new and exciting music for Auckland audiences every year.

We're proud of our unbroken tradition of presenting Handel's Messiah, the world's best-loved oratorio, every Christmas without fail - even during the war years when male voices were in short supply! Some spectacular performances in recent years include Walton's Belshazzar's Feast, Vaughan Williams' Sea Symphony, a staged production of Bach's St Matthew Passion, and the New Zealand premières of Leonard Bernstein's Mass, Paul McCartney's Liverpool Oratorio, and the recently discovered Berlioz Messe solennelle.

We regularly perform with top international soloists, and over the years we have helped launch the careers of many world-class singers such as Dame Malvina Major, Sir Donald McIntyre, Heather Begg, Wendy Dixon, Grant Dickson, and the late Noel Mangin.

This year, with the generous assistance of Piper's Patent and TradeMark Attorneys, our specialist orchestra Piper's Sinfonia joins us for three of our main subscription concerts. Led by Baroque specialist violinist Graham McPhail, this orchestra is already making a great impression on the Auckland music scene.

"Among the choir's strengths were upward leaps of pinpoint accuracy, entries that breathed their way in pianissimo, yet with clarity of articulation that revelled in the Town Hall's acoustics, and a big full throated sonority for the high points"

- Heath Lees, New Zealand Herald, 30 July 2001 - 'Dream of Gerontius'
