Janowitz's Agathe is pure-voiced and offers perfectly weighted phrases but remains curiously uninvolving. Schreier is a rather hard-voiced but stylish Max, Mathis an eager but slightly self-conscious Aennchen, Adam a petulant rather than devilish Caspar."
