Anne Sofie von Otter and Bengt Forsberg have had their eyes on this repertoire right from the start of their careers. Sometimes the vocal line is authentic, as with Grainger, Kodály and Britten. At others it is more composed in the style of folk music, as with Dvorák, Larsson and Reynaldo Hahn. Folk- or "folk-inspired", Otter and Forsberg found these songs express human emotions in a more straightforward and immediate way than traditional lieder.
