He's been called a pied piper and a pop musician par excellence. Yet Ireland's James Galway, the world's favorite flutist, insists that he is first and foremost a serious musician. He won many scholarships before becoming the Berlin Philharmonic's principal flutist in 1969. He went solo in 1975 and was instantly successful as a live performer and a recording artist. In 1978, his version of John Denver's Annie's Song became an international hit alongside traditional recordings of Mozart and Vivaldi. His unique tone has subsequently sold millions of recordings and has won him many awards.

James Galway is featured in this 90-minute recital from the Waterfront Hall in Belfast, and in conversation with Melvyn Bragg on LWT's South Bank Show in which he talks candidly about his childhood, his teachers, his time at the Berlin Philharmonic and his solo career.
