"Agreeably varied and attractive introduction to the multifarious Masses of Vanhal"
Gramophone Magazine (July 2001)

"Grodd again demonstrates his affinity for the era in general and Vanhal in particular by pulling his forces together to produce sessions that are potent, committed, and revelatory. Both Artaria's performing editions and this recording have received high marks from two of the world's most respected musicologists, H.C. Robbins-Landon and Otto Biba."
- Robert Emmett, Fanfare, January/February 2002

"Maestro Grodd, who won a Cannes Classical Award for a previous recording of Vanhal's symphonies, has an uncanny knack for pacing that keeps the music moving at exactly the right speed, and he pays attention to every detail without sacrificing the whole. The recording is close yet properly balanced. At the low Naxos price, it is a must-have item."
- Schwann Inside Jazz & Classical (Rad Bennett) October 2001

Recorded at St John's Cathedral, Napier-July/August 2000

A prolific and highly successful contemporary of Haydn and Mozart, Vanhal worked most of his life in Vienna as a freelance composer. Although he was not a church musician by profession, Vanhal's large output of sacred music contains some of the finest settings of the Mass composed in late 18th-century Vienna.
