Christian Lindberg, one of the true BIS veterans, returns with a CD which carries his unmistakable imprint.

The CD opens with Lindberg's own trombone concerto, Mandrake in the corner (previously released on BIS-CD-1148). At the other end of the disc a dramatic ending is provided by Cantos de la Mancha, composed by Jan Sandström - responsible for the "Motorbike Concerto" (BIS-CD-538) and other Lindberg key works - in close cooperation with the soloist. The two have returned to the story of Don Quixote who also provided the subject matter for Sandström's trombone concerto in 1994 (BIS-CD-828). The new work is in Lindberg's own words, "a tribute to the ridiculous, intuitive and emotional human being, engaged in an impossible fight against rationalism and the intellect." In between these works Lindberg and the Singapore Symphony Orchestra give their accounts of two pioneering works for the trombone as a solo instrument. Axel Jørgensen's Suite for trombone and orchestra from 1926 is written in a spirit of Danish national romanticism reminiscent of Niels W. Gade. Norwegian Egil Hovland's trombone concerto is a later work but in a neoclassic vein.
