"A very different Christmas disc that finds Paul McCreesh on homeground in a superb and majestic Venetian musical reconstruction." Editor's Choice - Gramophone Magazine (Dec 2001)

After the outstanding success of Venetian Vespers and, more recently, Music for San Rocco, Paul McCreesh recreates another Venetian sacred spectacle, with this Christmas Mass from San Marco.

The ordinary of the mass will be Cipriano de Rore's sumptuous setting based upon "Praeter rerum serium" by Josquin. It is sung by 14 male voices a cappella.

Interspersed are magnificent polychoral canzonas, sonatas and motets by Giovanni Gabrieli. The instrumental music is for strings, cornetts, sackbuts and organs, while the motets - which include "Audite Principes" and the ravishing "O Jesu mi Dulcissime" - are for cappella alone or cappella with instrumental choirs.

As would have been customary, the Mass will commence with a processional and chant, and will include the brilliant fanfares for natural trumpets that always accompanied the presence of the Doge at San Marco.
