"This set is valuable for the resonant contribution of Boris Christoff, for a generation unmatched in the role of Boris. It is good that his glorious voice is so vividly caught on CD." (Penguin Stereo Guide)
During the 1950s and 60s the great Bulgarian bass Boris Christoff inherited the mantle of his famous Russian predecessor Feodor Chaliapin as the world's greatest exponent of the role of the tortured Russian Tsar Boris Godunov. In this, his second recording of the part for EMI, Christoff's gloriously resonant voice is caught to perfection. On this occasion he also sings the cameo roles of Pimen and Vaarlam, relishing the contrast of these other, highly characterful bass parts.
