Hyperion's series 'The English Hymn' reaches Volume 3

"A collection to lift up your hearts - and take you back to those school assemblies." (Gramophone March 2003)

Hyperion's series 'The English Hymn' reaches Volume 3 with this anthology mingling well-loved favourites with perhaps less familiar hymns. The programme follows 'the Church year' from Advent ('Hills of the north, rejoice', which gives the disc its title), though Christmas ('O little town of Bethlehem' set by Walford Davies), Easter ('When I survey the wondrous Cross') to Harvest ('We plough the fields and scatter') and All Saints ('For all the saints'). Again the programme is in the capable and loving hands of Wells Cathedral Choir under their director, hymn-specialist Malcolm Archer, and Wells Cathedral's organist, Rupert Gough.

Tracks:

Hills of the north, rejoice;
On Jordan's Bank the Baptist's cry;
Of the Father's heart begotten;
O little town of Bethlehem;
Brightest and best of the sons of the morning;
From the eastern mountains;
Forty days and forty nights;
Lord Jesus, think on me;
Ah, holy Jesu, how hast thou offended; It is a thing most wonderful;
Drop, drop, slow tears;
When I survey the wondrous Cross;
Come ye faithful, raise the strain;
Ye choirs of new Jerusalem;
Hail the day that sees Him rise; Gracious Spirit, Holy Ghost;
Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire;
I bind unto myself today;
Holy, Holy, Holy;
We plough the fields and scatter;
For the beauty of the earth;
Palms of glory;
For all the saints
