Michel-Richard de Lalande was the leading composer of sacred music at the French court during the 17th Century. His Grands Motets - he composed 77 - dominated the repertory of the Royal Chapel during his lifetime and after, until the 1770s in the programmes of the Concert Spirituel in Paris. His works are marked by both expressive harmonic vocabulary and contrapuntal mastery, which is exemplary in this set.

Olivier Schneebeli directs three early works by the French composer Michel-Richard de Lalande, master of the late-Baroque grand motet. Recorded here for the first time, these motets date from Lalande's arrival at Versailles in 1683 as one of four composers chosen by Louis XIV to write for the Chapel Royal. The centrepiece is the motet Beati quorum, the competition piece that won Lalande his post at Versailles, but all three are remarkable for their energy and inventiveness and the freshness of their inspiration.

This live recording was made during a festival of Lalande's music organised by the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles in autumn 2001.
