'In a celebrated cast, Gedda, as Hoffmann, sings beautifully and with dramatic feeling, Victoria de los Angeles is a delightful Antonia, Schwarzkopf brings sumptuous creamy tone to Giulietta, Blanc is a splendid Dapertutto, and the smaller parts, mostly taken by French singers, sound completely idiomatic.' (Gramophone)

In adapting stories by the German romantic writer E.T.A. Hoffmann, Offenbach anticipated that in his only grand opera The Tales of Hoffmann he would achieve his masterpiece. Though he died before the work's premiere, in Paris in 1881, it soon became apparent that Offenbach had realised his aim.
