"The Mussorgsky songs constitute a complete world in themselves, and they cast a strong spell: their range is enormous and their insight into the human condition deep. Christoff was at the height of his vocal powers when he made this set"
Rosette: Penguin Guide to Compact Discs

"The Mussorgsky songs constitute a complete world in themselves, and they cast a strong spell: their range is enormous and their insight into the human condition deep. Christoff was at the height of his vocal powers when he made this set with Alexander Labinsky, his accompanist in most of the songs; and its return to circulation cannot be too warmly welcomed."
Rosette (Highest Award) Penguin Guide to Comact Discs

'One of the all-time glories of the gramophone. Christoff carries through his task magnificently, bringing each character and scene before us most vividly, using a wonderful variety of tone and inflexion, and making us feel that he has reached the heart of all these songs.' (Gramophone)

This reissue concentrates on the song-cycles (the charming Nursery and the realistically bleak Sunless and Songs and Dances of Death) with a selection of other songs (some with piano, others with orchestra) to act as prelude to and interludes between the song-cycles. The postlude is Mussorgsky's most famous song - Mephistopheles' 'Song of the Flea' from Goethe's Faust.

Tracks:

1. The Nursery
2. Sunless
3. Songs And Dances Of Death
