February 2003 marked the 70th birthday of Dutch soprano Elly Ameling, a much-loved artist on the Philips label. This collection is a 5-CD capbox with notes in English, French, German and Dutch.
Elly Ameling is particularly known for the clear beauty of her voice. Her long career was distinguished above all by her interpretations of German Lieder and she particularly excelled in Schubert, Schumann, Brahms and Wolf. In her concerts and recordings she was regularly partnered by Dalton Baldwin and Rudolf Jansen, and established a rare rapport with these pianists.
Ameling was no stranger to oratorio and she can be heard here in arias from Bach's Passions, Handel's Messiah, and Haydn's Die Schöpfung. She was also one of the first serious artists to perform lighter repertory and during the latter part of her career recorded a number of songs by Gershwin, Cole Porter and Duke Ellington - a selection of these and other lighter fare is included on the last disc of this anniversary set.
