The Mass in A flat is one of the most lyrical that Schubert composed. It is also one of the most ambitious (Schubert noted at the top of his manuscript 'missa solemnis'), in terms of its instrumental forces, as well as the number and arrangement of the voices.

"The pairing of Schubert's A minor Mass and Mendelssohn's psalm setting Wie der Hirsch schreit is inspired - on the one hand Schubert at his most enriching and expansive; on the other, Mendelssohn in typically steadfast mode. Well-matched soloists and the finely-groomed singing of the RIAS- Kammerchor add to the feast."
