[ Deutsche Grammophon / 2 CD ]

Release Date: Monday 9 June 2003

For Archiv Produktion and Deutsche Grammophon he recorded altogether four solo LPs in the 1960s and 1970s. Although his repertoire has been exploited in many reissues, our celebration release brings together ALL of his DGG recordings for the first time in a compact two-CD set.

Maurice André celebrated his 70th birthday on 21 May 2003. The 20th-century's greatest trumpeter has enjoyed an unprecedented career as a soloist, achieving particular success through the use of the four-valved piccolo trumpet, which allowed his gifts of endurance, range and musicality to come to the fore.

For Archiv Produktion and Deutsche Grammophon he recorded altogether four solo LPs in the 1960s and 1970s. Although his repertoire has been exploited in many reissues, our celebration release brings together ALL of his DGG recordings for the first time in a compact two-CD set. The coupling follows the original sequence of each LP, starting with Telemann, under Karl Richter, before proceeding to Joseph Haydn.

CD 2 contains the famously synchronized Vivaldi double concerto, works by Alessando Scarlatti (also featuring flautist Hans-Martin Linde), Viviani and Torelli (with the English Chamber Orchestra under Charles Mackerras), before rounding off with the great Handel aria that gives the album its title (sung in German by Franz Carss).

The box packaging features a number of rare photographs of the artist and his collaborators, as well as a specially commissioned article from trumpet expert Edward Tarr. With the help of recent research we have been able to pin down properly titles and sources of many of the works recorded for the first time.
