Woldemar Bargiel was Clara Schumann's step-brother, and wrote his Octet while studying at the Leipzig Conservatoire. During his lifetime he enjoyed some success as a composer, but in the 20th century his works have encountered neglect. Bargiel has a distinctive lyrical gift and throughout the piece we encounter reminiscences of Schumann.
The Mendelssohn Octet is, of course, well-known by many, and this performance brings the piece wonderfully to life.
