Anton Rubinstein was not only one of the most important pianists of the nineteenth century but also a celebrated composer.

Anton Rubinstein (1829-94) was not only one of the most important pianists of the nineteenth century but also a celebrated composer. His musical idiom may have been on the conservative side, but in his choice of formal structures he practically joined ranks with the New Germans. His Don Quixote op. 87, a "musical character sketch," has a clear program linking it to Liszt's progressive music. The flock of sheep found in Richard Strauss some thirty years later already grazes in Rubinstein's green pastures.

Tracks:

Ballet Music for Orchestra from his opera The Demon
Concerto for violoncello and orchestra op. 63 A minor /a-Moll
Don Quixote op. 87
