It is not exactly common knowledge that Édouard Lalo was a contemporary of Johannes Brahms. At most one could say that Lalo's music is in circulation in France, but even there his reputation is limited largely to the opera Le roi d'Ys. Outside France his Symphonie espagnole perhaps qualifies as a known quantity. This complete recording of his trios by the Trio Parnassus, a first-class ensemble in every respect, demonstrates that Lalo also stands for splendid chamber music.
