"They [the Vienna Philharmonic] are so proud to have this great tradition, they are so loving of what they do and of who they are. This is something I catch like a disease - it's so contagious for me because I operate in terms of love." (Leonard Bernstein)

Bernstein's Beethoven cycle is now on 5 CDs for the first time (previously 6 CDs).

Leonard Bernstein on the Eroica: "If we can take away with us even the tiniest idea of what is operating in this music that makes it so superior to other music of this epoch, then we shall be taking away a great deal."

At the time of recording Leonard Bernstein had developed a newly thought-out interpretation for the Fifth Symphony. Previously, according to LB, it was "too sung and Brahmsian", now he has developed it into something "really agitated and staccato" (first movement).

Leonard Bernstein on the Ninth Symphony (which LB first performed on 1 September 1952): "Beethoven, like the greatest of prophets and teachers, knew how to pluck from the air the essential, the elementally true, and develop from it a complex superstructure that embraces all human experience".
