"As Chandos reissues its splendid 'Stokowski's Symphonic Bach' discs as part of its 25th anniversary series (reviewed on page 67), another superb disc of Bach in exotic guise joins it. This is a fascinating collection of Bach orchestrated by some of the great conductors of the last century, from Sir Henry Wood's remarkable Suite to Mitropoulos's version of the Fantasia and Fugue in G minor, a work that seems so amazingly modern." (Gramophone)

Many composers have arranged the music of Bach, but it is rarer to hear conductors' transcriptions. This novel collection contains works by Bach in sumptuous orchestrations by some of the great interpreters of the twentieth century, including Eric Leinsdorf, Sir Henry Wood, Sir Malcolm Sargent, Sir John Barbirolli, Dimitri Mitropoulos and Otto Klemperer.

Some of these unique arrangements are recorded here for the first time, and other transcriptions are rarely performed, making this collection unique.

The music is highly colourful and very enjoyable, and will delight anyone who appreciates brilliant orchestration as well as demonstration sound.

Leonard Slatkin's previous disc of composers' Bach transcriptions received huge critical acclaim. It was an Evening Standard CD Choice and a Gramophone Critics' Choice of 2001.
