'Richly expressive playing, heartfelt performance' The Penguin Complete Guide

Sir Edward Elgar is one of the most famous and popular of all British composers. His career straddled the 19th and 20th centuries and is notable for producing some of the best-loved works for the English repertoire. Deeply inspired by England's countryside and culture he wrote dazzling choral and orchestral works full of bold tunes and striking orchestrations such in the Enigma Variations and his wonderful Cello Concerto.

The glorious Cello Concerto and the Enigma Variations are Elgar's most universally famous works and it is therefore fitting that they should be included in this new collection.

Sir Alexander Gibson's Elgar recordings are very highly regarded.

Included are two further Elgar 'hits' - the Chanson de matin and Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1.

Tracks:

Pomp and Circumstance March in D major, Op. 39 No. 1
Cello Concerto in E minor, Op. 85
Chanson de matin, Op. 15 No. 2
Variations on an Original Theme 'Enigma', Op. 36
