"I loved the sound of this recording: clear with a sumptuously enveloping hall sound that was very comforting and easy to settle into. Recommended with a glass of port after a fine meal."
- Audiophile Audition, May, 2000

"The star of this CD is Tim Hugh, the British cellist who is currently the principal cellist of the London Symphony Orchestra. A student of Aldo Parisot and Jacqueline Du Pre, he received an MA in medicine from Cambridge. He plays with a rich tone, secure in both upper and lower registers, emotionally expressive without the sometimes seductive exaggeration of Du Pre. The more I listened to these ingratiating concertos, the more I appreciated the warmth and clarity he brought to these sunny and beautiful works.

"Tim Hugh on Naxos is very polished and confident, and not afraid to put some feeling into his work. His tone is superb."

"Throughout, Tim Hugh is a stylish and persuasive soloist, very secure in the high tessitura of these works and with a gentle, soft-edged tone (the product of gut strings?). He is helped by a sympathetic balance in which the solo cello is clearly heard, yet is still part of the general sonority. It doesn't have the artificial separation that often characterizes recorded performances of concertos."
- Record Review (David Wyn Jones), Mar 2000

"These days it comes as a refreshing change to have 18th century music back on modern, not period instruments. These performances have the best of both worlds, with Anthony Halstead drawing fresh, resilient playing from the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, and with Tim Hugh an immaculate soloist, lively in allegros and tenderly reflective in slow movements. These are early works which show Boccherini at his most attractively individual."
