Jessye Norman heads the cast in this much-acclaimed recording of Stavinsky's opera Oedipus Rex. Her imperious and impassioned Jocasta is a wonderful interpretation. The cast also includes Peter Schreier as the eponymous hero and a young Bryn Terfel as Creon.
Schoenberg's Erwartung is one of opera's most famously avant-garde works, but Jessye Norman and James Levine bring out the work's lush and intoxicating beauty more than any other performance. Miss Norman has a fine time in the contrasting Brettl-Lieder, capturing to perfection the sensual sophistication and humour of these surprising cabaret songs.
