'Well worth hearing' (BBC Music Magazine)
'Worth investigating' (Fanfare, USA)
Vanhal was one of the large number of Bohemian composers and instrumentalists of the late 18th and early 19th centuries who, out of necessity, had to travel abroad to find employment for his talents. Though not strictly 'abroad', Vanhal went to Vienna and had it not been for the presence of such remarkable luminaries as Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven at that period, figures such as Hummel and Vanhal may have achieved a much more important place in European musical history.
This new recording is of one of the many chamber works that he wrote and the score states either flute or oboe could be employed. However, on closer examination, the score suggests that Vanhal probably had the oboe in mind.
