Bob Wills, who died in 1975 at age 70, was a master Texas fiddler and musical renegade. A member of both the Country Music and Rock and Roll Halls of Fame, the Western Swing he spearheaded with his legendary band the Texas Playboys in the 1930s was a musical tapestry that packed Southwestern dancehalls for over 20 years.
Encompassing country, blues, jazz and pop, it was as diverse, daring and durable as bluegrass or Zydeco. Hailed for influencing the sound of postwar Nashville, Wills never considered himself country. When rock swept America in the 1950s, he was quick to praise it. Brad Paisley, Lyle Lovett and Willie Nelson, Asleep At The Wheel and Merle Haggard are just a few of Wills' many modern disciples.
This box set, featuring 105 tracks on 4 discs, is a breathtaking, in-depth overview of Wills' career in one package starting with his first recordings with the Fort Worth Doughboys in 1932. It explores the Playboys' epochal 1935-1947 ARC and Columbia recordings including "Steel Guitar Rag," "Twin Guitar Special," his signature tune "New San Antonio Rose," "Bubbles In My Beer" and the now-classic "Faded Love." It ends with selections from Wills' final session in 1973.
With extensive notes and musical analysis by veteran country music historian and Wills authority Rich Kienzle - based on his interviews with key members of the Playboys, and rare photos from longtime Wills collector Glenn White, this impressive collection demonstrates why Bob Wills and his music remain touchstones for the ages.
