The Spain of the 17th and 18th centuries saw dance music reach its moment of greatest brilliance. Tunes of archaic and rustic origins co-existed harmoniously with more recently introduced styles such as the fandango or minuet and with those with colonial roots like the cumbées and zarambeques. This recording gathers together a representative selection of all these, wherein the guitar takes the leading role in a great play of colourful improvisation and variations.
