ALEXANDER IVASHKIN is one of three Russian cellists (after Mstislav Rostropovich and Natalia Gutman) for whom Schnittke wrote his cello works.

Ivashkin recorded Schnittke complete cello works on 'CHANDOS'. Close friend of the composer, he published several books on Schnittke, including the only book on Schnittke and his music in English (London, 'Phaidon',1996), 'Schnittke' (Torino, 1993), 'Conversations with Alfred Schnittke' (Moscow, 1994), Alfred Schnittke ueber das Leben und die Musik, Munich, 'Econ'1998), 'Schnittke Reader' (Indiana UP,in print). As a soloist and chamber musician Alexander IVASHKIN has performed in more than 30 countries playing under conductors such as Muti, Ozawa, Rozhdestvensky, Furst, Lazarev. He has been a regular guest at many important music festivals in Europe, Britain, United States, Japan , Australia and New Zealand .He appears regularly as a soloist with some of the leading orchestras.
Alexander Ivashkin has established international reputation as proponent of the twentieth century cello repertoire. He collaborated with the composers such as Cage, Crumb, Kagel, Penderecki. He is also first performer of many composition by Russian composers such as Denisov, Gubaidulina, Mansurian, Tarnopolski, Korndorf, Raskatov, Smirnov, Knaifel. His performances and recordings of Prokofiev, Shostakovich and Schnittke music have been highly acclaimed by critics on different continents.

In 1999 Dr Alexander Ivashkin has been appointed Professor of Music at the University of London and Director of the Centre for Russian Music there.
