'Caballé gives a splendidly dramatic portrait of the heroine and Pavarotti's performance is full of creative, detailed imagination. Maag's sympathetic reading, by underlining the light and shade, consistently brings out the atmospheric qualities of Verdi's conception ... brilliantly played and vividly recorded.' The Penguin Guide to Compact Discs
Outstanding Verdi singers Caballé & Pavarotti are ideally cast as Luisa and Rodolfo in the story of the village girl who falls in love with the Count's son.
Luisa Miller is generally regarded as the first of Verdi's mature operas and is a fascinating blend of bel canto and mature Verdian drama. Verdi brings psychological insights to the character of Luisa which he would develop further just four years later in La Traviata. It is based on Schiller's tragedy Kabale und Liebe, with a libretto by Salvatore Cammarano which is included as a CDROM file on one of the discs.
