Joseph Haydn is considered to be more or less the inventor of the genre string quartet. Although he also wrote quite a number of trio's for various instruments, his quartets excel in equilibrium in every possible way. He wrote two violins, a viola and a cello into a perfect match. And he apparently loved it so much that he wrote no less than 83 of them.

In this fourth volume the excellent Buchberger Quartet continues its recordings of the complete string quartet by Joseph Haydn. The two CD's contain six quartets, opus 71 and 74, three each.
