"After a tough run with Grieg's Piano Concerto here recently, Christchurch's Jeffrey Grice, resident in Paris for 30 years, turns up trumps in languorously rhapsodic Liszt on this generous French CD of 75 minutes. Grice keeps foreground melody and background bravura detail in perfect perspective with pin-sharp detail. Rubato phrase shaping makes Liszt's long tenor melodies flow with stately poise in the six Consolations and three Liebesträume. Nothing is rushed. In the longer works he catches the unusual harmonic twists with his fine pedalling in Valle d'Obermann and the heavy double octave bravura in Ballade No 2 is aggressive yet clear. This is really eloquent playing of Liszt."
