These two settings of the Stabat Mater provide fascinating contrasts: Vivaldi's being composed for solo voice, Pergolesi's for two voices; the former still little known, the latter one of the few works for which Pergolesi remains famous to this day. Each, however, expresses Mary's grief at the foot of the Cross with utterly Baroque sensitivity.
