Too often reduced to a few scores (Carnival of the Animals, La Danse Macabre, the Third Symphony with organ), the music of Saint-Saens did not deserve to be despised. And this disc admirable and admirably defended by its three protagonists provides irrefutable proof.
Pascal Verrot directs with an obvious, natural and refinement that many may envy. Refusing any excess dynamic, never push the trait, it cisèle, details, ensures a balance between the strings and winds in the orchestra and is the alter ego of the soloist. Abdel Rahman El Bacha performs with enthusiasm to serving the two partitions with authority, panache, finesse and clarity. But more important, he delivers the rich expressive of the two concertos - the tension, emotion, lyricism.
Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 2 in G minor, op.22
Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 1 in D major op.17
