Eugène d'Albert was born in Scotland but moved to Germany, before finally gaining Swiss citizenship at the start of the First World War.

His 'multicultural' life is reflected in his works which comprise a wealth of different musical styles. CPO presents d'Albert's first and only symphony which is infused with a Brahmsian spirit. The concert scene Das Seejungfräulein (The Little Mermaid), composed ten years later, represented art nouveau and receives its recording première on this disc.
