Antonín Reicha was a friend of Beethoven, a respected teacher and one of the most highly regarded musical figures of the early 19th century. His compositions include many operas, symphonies, concertos, large-scale choral works and a vast collection of chamber music. The twenty-five wind quintets won him immediate acclaim, despite being unusual not only in their combination of instruments but the prominence given to each soloist in turn. They possess an abundance of melodic invention, with tonal colours skilfully and evocatively explored.

"The Michael Thompson Wind Quintet give expert accounts of these attractive pieces. Their playing is very fresh and alive, and Reicha can be both rewarding and interesting-it is finely wrought and pleasing. Very good sound." Penguin Guide

"…the performances turned in by the Michael Thompson Wind Quintet, which is made up of five of London's finest wind-players, are artistically strong in each and every respect. The overall atmosphere is one of relaxation that enhances the naturalness and intimacy of Reicha's scores, and weighted with just the right amount of emotion, gravitas, and dazzling technique" Fanfare
