Karl Goldmark is a composer whose former fame and glory have faded to a faint glimmer. The Quintet Op. 30 exhibits a flexible approach to modulation influenced by Schubert. The later Quintet Op. 54 also exemplifies his typical employment of harmony, sharpened motivic work, and permanent modulations - together with some suggestions of the modern.

This late work shows Goldmark's fresh musical vigour and both are powerfully interpreted by the Quatuor Sine Nomine and Oliver Triendl at the piano.
