Philip Moore studied at the Royal College of Music. He also has a Durham B.Mus. On graduating from the RCM he joined the teaching staff at Eton. In 1968 he moved to Canterbury Cathedral as Assistant Organist, and in 1974 he became Organist and Master of the Choristers at Guildford Cathedral. In 1983 he moved to York Minster as Organist and Master of the Music. He retired from there in 2008. Although he continues to play and conduct, much of his time is now spent in composing, chiefly for choirs and organs. He has also composed for orchestras and chamber ensembles. His most recent compositions include an anthem for the Installation of the Dean of Norwich and an extended work for the Choir of St John's Wood Church, London. He recently won second prize in a competition promoted by the Church of St Thomas, Fifth Avenue, New York City, for a set of Evening Canticles for treble voices. He has been awarded various honours and awards, including a doctorate from the University of York and, from the Archbishop of York, the Order of St William of York.
