Villa Lobos: String Quartets Nos 11, 16, 17

"The Danubius Quartet plays with far more polish and tonal allure than does the comparatively scratchy Bessler-Reis ensemble. Moreover, the Hungarians play with a greater range of contrast - slow movements are slower, quick movements sometimes (but not always) quicker, rhythms are more secure. This permits those gorgeous melodies in the slow movements (No. 8's is a case in point) to really sing." Fanfare
