Orange Mountain Music presents a new recording by the Basel Sinfonieorchester of Philip Glass' Symphony No.1 "Low" based on the music of David Bowie & Brian Eno. Composed in 1992, Glass took his departure from Bowie & Eno's beautiful melodies in crafting a three movement 46-minute symphony. This new recording conducted by Glass champion Dennis Russell Davies is a shimmering rendition of the work. Only the second recording of the Symphony, it's been 20 years since the last one, the previous recording was recorded in the studio sectionally whereas this new OMM recording was made live in Basel Switzerland and captures the vitality and evidence of the work as never heard before.

"Glass's unusual decision to quote and develop melodic lines and harmonic patterns from rock music imparts a sense of freshness, energy and drive to the work. Of equal importance, perhaps, is the very way Glass plays around with standard formal principles." (Gramophone)

"I have no quibble with the original Brooklyn recording of this work on Decca. However, I must say, that Davies decision to re-record the piece with the Sinfonieorchester Basel, Switzerland, is a good one. This new recording has lots of presence and even a bit more "drive" to it (perhaps in Davies re-examination of the work.) I do recommend this a lot, especially for fans of Philip Glass." (AudAud.com)
